Do Protein Supplements Really Help Maximize Your Workout?

Why do people take protein supplements and how do they help with exercise? First of all, protein helps to build lean muscle. According to the FDA we are supposed to consume roughly 150 grams of protein per day. There is roughly 4 calories per gram so this would be the equivalent of eating 600 calories of protein daily. This is about thirty-percent of our average daily diet.

Protein as a supplement is a great idea, especially if you are exercising consistently. The question then becomes, what type of protein should you be taking? In our opinion, one of the best sources of protein is from Whey. Now Whey comes from dairy and many people do not eat anything that is dairy-based because of lactose intolerance or other reasons. That is why any Whey protein supplement should be Whey isolate. Isolate means the Whey protein is isolated and extracted from the dairy so the dairy byproducts are left behind. You want to find a product that uses Whey isolate that is at least ninety-percent isolate or ninety-five percent. The higher the percentage, the higher quality of the supplement.

A popular trend now is to take a "post-workout" product after exercising. There are many different "post-workout" products in the marketplace. Many of these have simple carbohydrates added in addition to the protein. There has been much evidence as of late that simple sugars and simple carbohydrates can lessen post-workout pain and soreness. Again, look for high-quality Whey isolate as the protein source.
