We've heard it many times, seen it in commercials, and probably even said it ourselves. But is it true that without pain there is no gain when exercising?
"No Pain, No Gain" is indeed a myth. You do not have to feel pain to experience benefits from exercising. However, to see significant physical changes to the body in terms of muscle mass or significant fat loss, you need to push yourself as much as you can. This can result in pain.
The most often form of pain associated with exercise is post-workout soreness. When you are engaged in strenuous exercise and resistance training, you are literally breaking down tissue. The body replenishes the tissue and it grows stronger and bigger. But the breaking down of this tissue can be -and usually is -painful.
Here is a helpful hint. There is a window of opportunity after you work out where you can eat certain types of foods that will minimize soreness. The foods may surprise you a little, but more and more research shows that these foods are indeed helpful in reducing post-workout pain.
When you workout you are leaching sugar from the muscles. This is a good thing but by replacing the simple sugars immediately after a workout the muscles will consume them right away. The simple sugars actually help reduce the muscles recovery time, meaning you will not be as sore. This would be the only time that we would recommend eating simple sugars but because you have just engaged in a workout, the simple sugars will be consumed by the muscles and will not turn into fat.
