Organic Apples:
Alternative Treatments for Diabetes, Antioxidant-Rich Organic Apples and Apple Vinegar Help Control Blood Glucose

One antioxidant-rich superfood, apples, may be an effective alternative treatment for diabetes and natural control of blood glucose levels (measured in the morning). Both the apple and apple skin are nutrient rich including specific nutrients selenium and zinc (shown to have some cancer prevention effects or risk reduction), and vitamins like A, C, E, and individual carotenoids (like beta-carotene) and retinol (vitamin A booster) that are nutritional value, but little effect on reducing cancers or pre-cancerous lesions.

Cloudy apple juice or apple vinegar (less processed than clear juice) have a higher content of procyanidins (a type of flavonoid) and polyphenols that is also an important antioxidant source. In a study of patients using a small, daily amount of apple cider vinegar at bedtime at a slight, but noticeable drop in morning, blood glucose levels, thus indicating that there are some natural benefits for Type 2 diabetics. Apples are a superfood rich in cyanidins (antioxidants) that are available in red wine and cocoa, as well.

Antioxidant Benefits and Blood Sugar Control:

The chemicals and antioxidants in apples, juice and cider have some indication of being effective, alternative treatments for diabetes, at least in lowering blood glucose levels naturally. One study indicates that individuals taking two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar at bedtime had lowered glucose levels in the morning by 4%-6%. Although this is a small reduction, the results are significant. This naturally, alternative may help pre-diabetics control blood sugar levels without the use of medicines; and, for Type 2 diabetics, there is the possibility of reducing (not eliminating) medication dosages. This is preliminary, and any diabetic should discuss this with a doctor before daily usage, as, there is some evidence that apple cider vinegar may actually interfere with certain classes of diabetes medications. Alongside the benefits in controlling morning blood glucose levels, there is considerable evidence that nutrients in apples and cloudy juices, antioxidants, polyphenols and other compounds help control weight and may one day be an effective tool in fighting obesity, cholesterol levels, and even reduce the risk of some cardiovascular diseases or degeneration.

A study of cloudy apple juice (juice without added enzymes frequently used in processing) by researchers from the Agricultural University of Wroclaw and the Medical University of Warsaw, Poland, indicates that some apples have an extremely useful nutritional benefit. Cloudy juice from Champion apples contained 1,044 milligrams of polyphenols per liter, while clear juice made from Idared apples contained only 250 milligrams per liter (indicating the differences between highly processed juice and more natural cloudy apple juice). The results indicate that cloudy apple juices neutralized 93% of free radicals after only three minutes, compared to 24% neutralization in the clear juice.

Antioxidants are a natural way to fight of damage caused by free radicals in the body, thus reducing the risk of cell wall damage and even precancerous lesions and cancerous cells. This particular study may be an indication of medicinal uses of the chemical compounds and polyphenols available from apples.

Alternative treatments for diabetes should include organic, fresh, raw foods, fruits and vegetables. The less-processed the food, the better it is for your health.

Cancers and Risk Reduction:

Studies over the last couple of decades are, at best confusing, regarding the anti-inflammatory, and cancer-preventive, or cancer fighting properties of apples, apple juice and apple cider vinegar. Although touted as a “cure-all” for centuries, apple cider vinegar does have properties that may be effective in reducing the risk of certain cancers. Research presented to the 2004Frontiers in Cancer Prevention Research conference in Seattle, WA, indicated that chemical compounds in apples specifically reduce the risk of colon cancer. Lab studies of cancer-prone rats getting a mixture of water and extracted apple juice (abundant in antioxidants) for six weeks had approximately half of the number of precancerous colon lesions, thus, at least in a lab setting, backs up the possibility of apples as a cancer-fighter.

A study by the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine led by Linda Kelemen, RD, ScD, indicated that diets rich in natural sources of antioxidants including apples and leafy greens reduced non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma by up to 40%.

Additionally, on type of antioxidants from the Cyanidins group (procyanidins) indicate in lab test a triggered specific cell signals that actually resulted in cancerous cell death – a very interesting possibility for medicinal usages.

Other studies of the cancer-fighting benefits of apple cider vinegar are quite mixed. Observational studies in humans have indicated that apple cider vinegar may be effective in fighting esophageal (throat) cancer, while another study indicated that larger dosages of the vinegar might actually increase the chances of bladder cancers.

Contraindications of Apple Cider Vinegar:

The mixed results from lab studies and studies in humans are indication that more research is required. Apple cider vinegar, used in larger doses or long-term, seems to have negative counteractions with a variety of diuretics, medicines for diabetes, medicines for heart disease, and laxatives. Long-term use is quite likely to lower potassium, thus, is not advisable for individuals suffering from bone loss or osteoporosis. Additionally, apple cider vinegar contains chromium, a mineral that can alter insulin levels, and, the highly acidic nature of vinegars can cause tissue damage if not diluted with water.
