Avocados:
Superfood Rich in Nutrients and Vitamins with Many Health Benefits
Lowering cholesterol naturally with a diet rich in avocados and other fruits and vegetables have multiple health benefits. Avocados, rich sources of vitamins, lipo-proteins, and monounsaturated fats, now understood to help lower in LDL or “bad cholesterol” while slightly improving levels of HDL or “good cholesterol,” offer many nutritional and health benefits. Avocados are also a rich source of beta-sitosterol, a natural substance shown to effectively lower blood cholesterol (1999 study in the American Journal of Medicine). Avocados also work effectively with other superfoods for health and nutritional synergy.
Important Source of Folic Acid and Folate:
Folic acid, folate and other compounds in the Vitamin B group are essential for proper cell functioning and absolutely necessary for proper cell and DNA reproduction. Nutrient compounds in green leafy vegetables including avocados, spinach, turnips, asparagus, many beans, peas, and even fruits including bananas and oranges are ideal sources of folic acid.
Folic acid, folate and Vitamin B are essential in reducing risk factors for a variety of health concerns and diseases including:
- Birth defects – with new regulations dating from 1996, the FDA required the addition of folic acids in grains, breads, cereals and similar foodstuffs as a preventative for certain birth defects including spinal malformations in newborns and specifically, to reduce neural tube defects
- Heart diseases – folic acid, folate and Vitamin B group are effective in lowering cholesterol naturally and reducing cholesterol levels in many patients with a variety of benefits ranging from reducing cardiovascular diseases to diabetic problems (see below for more information on cholesterol control); low blood concentrations of the amino acid homocysteine (associated with low levels of folate, B6 and B12) is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease, blood vessel degeneration and strokes
- Seizures - some studies have even indicated a direct link, or at least a suspected link in low levels of folic acid and folate compounds and the onset of many kinds of seizures – a diet with the proper nutritional intake of these compounds and vitamins may reduce the likelihood of some types of seizures
- Other diseases and medical conditions include the possibilities of reducing risk for breast and colon cancers as the antioxidant properties help protect DNA and cells; lower levels of folic acid, folate and antioxidants in general may have a direct link to the likelihood or risk factors of cancerous growths later in life

Cholesterol Control:
Although many previous studies and suggested evidence indicated that avocados were actually a fatty plant, recent studies have indicated the health benefits of lowering cholesterol naturally with avocados. This plant is rich in nutrients and compounds in helping control cholesterol levels, blood lipid levels, bad LDL cholesterol, with a slight benefit for increased “good cholesterol” levels. Avocados are a rich source of lipo-proteins and beta-sitosterol (a compound shown to reduce blood cholesterol levels significantly).
These nutrient rich plants, avocados along with a low-fat diet can help with a variety of conditions associated with cholesterol problems and work synergistically with other foods to improve overall health. Lowering high cholesterol levels and high “bad cholesterol” levels can help promote overall coronary and cardiovascular system health, possibly reduce the increase in lipids associated with some medications, and help control blood fats that are frequently problematic for diabetics.
One Additional Benefit for Medication Usage:
Many medicines, particularly methotrexate can lower folate and folic acid levels in the blood. A diet rich in these nutrients and vitamins may help in a variety of conditions and diseases where medications may have the indicated harmful effects. Methotraxate, for example, is used for treating a variety of medical conditions including arthritis, asthma, lupus, inflammatory bowel disease psoriasis, and sarcoidosis.
Contraindications/Warnings:
As avocados and antioxidant rich diets can be high in folic acid and folates, there are a few warnings. Diets high in these compounds can actually mask vitamin B12 deficiencies, and in some individuals, rare adverse reactions can include fever, weakness, itching, rashes, shortness of breath or a tight feeling in the chest and even wheezing. These problems are usually quite rare.
