Pumpkin:
Intestinal Cleansing Products, Effective Vermifuge, and Urinary Problems

Pumpkin or pumpkin seeds (Cucurbita pepo) have nutritional value and medical purposes including as intestinal cleansing products. The centuries-old herbal remedies associated with pumpkins are generally backed by modern studies. Pumpkin seeds are another effective remedy for eradicating parasites. Additionally, the nutritional values of pumpkin seeds include good fatty acids, magnesium and phytosterols.
Elimination of Parasitic Worms:
For centuries, pumpkin seeds and the flesh of melons have been effective intestinal cleansing products and a cure for intestinal and parasitic worms. Almost every culture in the world (where pumpkins are indigenous) have used the seeds as a vermifuge (intestinal worms) and, specifically, as a taenifuge (tapeworms). Studies in China and from the period of the Soviet Union indicate that pumpkin seeds are effective on worms in both humans and animals. Other parasitical worms are expelled by the active amino acid cucurbitin in pumpkins also include cattle and pig tapeworms and pinworms.
Note: Mild side effects are reported when using pumpkin seeds as a vermifuge including nausea, dizziness and weakness, but no major medical contraindications are reported.
Detoxification:
Studies have shown pumpkin seeds to be a mild detoxificant. Daily intake in of the seeds generally slightly decreases urine output, but the elimination of uric acid and urea is generally increased.
Overactive Bladders, Urination Problems in Men and Women:
The use of pumpkin seeds as a natural, nutritional fatty acid supplement may help regulate problems associated with overactive bladders, incontinence and prostate health issues in men. Pumpkin seeds and amino extracts are one of the few botanicals that have received serious clinical analysis.
Some studies have indicated improved prostate health and/or reduction in urinary control symptoms in men. The use of amino acid cucurbitin also indicates improved bladder control in women after about six weeks of daily intake, particularly after menopause. Studies have also showed improved bladder control with the addition of daily intake of magnesium.
Additional studies from naturopathic doctors indicate urinary and bladder control issues are frequently associated with food sensitivity issues arising from inflammation. Common foods associated with these conditions include dairy products, bleached flours, and fried foods.
Of course, do not treat yourself with botanical remedies for urinary problems without consulting a physician; you may have a more serious, underlying medical condition requiring medical treatment.
