By the Year 2010, 48% OF AMERICA WILL BE CONSIDERED OBESE!

The government's response is suggesting we change the food pyramid. It's about time...

So will the new food pyramid be any better? Will they need to change it again? Who will be the winner in the new pyramid? The consumer? The food companies? The drug companies?

First things first; why do we need a new food pyramid? If we had no food pyramid whatsoever would we be the better or worse for it? With a current obesity rat of nearly 40% and projecting near 50% within six years, could we have done worse? I cannot prove it, but my guess is that without something like a "pyramid" we would need to read labels even more, dig in a little more and make our own decisions on what is best for our family. Am I being negligent or anti-government? Perhaps, but I don't mean to be but I can read statistics and we are in trouble. The good news is Obesity and Type 2 Diabetes are easily preventable.

Even the anti-Atkins types are coming off their high-horse and agreeing that 300 to 400 grams of carbohydrates a day may be contributing to the problem. I predict a new food pyramid that will focus on less overall carbs, way less refined carbs, (sorry cheap bread and pasta people), and still low-fat and moderate meats and dairy. This is silly. Each one of us are biochemically unique. For me, more protein and fat is good. For you, less protein and fat may be good. You need only to look at the various cultures around the world and see longevity comes in all forms of diet, i.e., traditional Eskimos living long lives eating high-fat, low-carb diets, while Indian tribes living long lives eating grains and veggies. Which is right? Answer: both. You need to look at your ancestry, build, lifestyle, tendencies, cravings and so on.

A must read on the subject of Metabolic Typing is a book called, The Metabolic Typing Diet, written by William Wolcott. After reading this book, if you do not agree that this is the most common-sense approach to food, then your common-sense meter is busted. Seriously, I suggest this book for anyone who wants to lose-weight, understand the fallacy of our food pyramid, or simply want to make their diet health-supporting.

As for the new food pyramid we shall see, in the meantime, eat right for your type.
