Friday, October 5, 2007 - "Balanced Health - Heart Health Part 2"

Segment 1 - CRP - C-Reactive Protein

  • CRP is an acronym for C-reactive protein, a plasma protein produced in the liver in response to inflammation
  • Because atherosclerosis (narrowing of the arteries) goes hand-in-hand with inflammation, elevated CRP is considered an important warning sign that cardiovascular problems may be in the works
  • Researchers have associated weight loss, exercise, and an intake of vitamin C and omega-3 fatty acids with a reduced risk of inflammation and, consequently, reduced levels of CRP
  • A new study from the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) reveals that supplements of another key nutrient may also help reduce inflammation and CRP
  • As the MUSC team notes (“Nutrition Research” May 2006), dietary magnesium is believed to reduce inflammation, but so far the role of magnesium supplements in inflammation reduction has not been clarified
  • Researchers collected data on more than 10,000 adults who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999-2002
  • Data on CRP levels and magnesium intake (either through diet, supplements or both) was examined
  • Analysis showed that about 25% of the subjects took a magnesium supplement of at least 50 mg per day
  • Among subjects who didn't take supplements, only 22 percent either met or exceeded the recommended daily allowance for magnesium intake (RDA for magnesium is 350 mg)
  • About 60 percent of subjects who took supplements met or exceeded RDA for magnesium. Subjects whose daily magnesium intake was below the RDA were significantly more likely to have elevated CRP levels
  • The researchers concluded: "Magnesium supplement intake is associated with a lower likelihood of elevated CRP in people with low dietary magnesium intake"

Segment 2 - Debunking the Myth - Target Heart Rate

Maximum Heart Rate is Not Always Healthy

  • Most fitness companies and many doctors propagate the agenda that maximum benefit comes from your "maximum target heart rate"
  • How do you determine your target heart rate? 225 minus your age times 80%
  • This MAY be true, however, it is a myth that max weight loss comes from there. In fact, a slower rate for longer periods has been shown to burn more fat
  • But more importantly, you must build up to your target heart rate slowly, or maybe not at all. You see, doing something consistently is what is most important, so if you have more fun at say, even 50%, that is what will bring you the most benefit long term

Bottom Line

  • Simple, balanced health is about being realistic -not eccentric. Exercise consistently and have fun. Don't get too caught up in your target heart rate but be more concerned with showing up.

Segment 3 - Joe's Healthy French Fry Recipe

Yep! You can eat french fries!

Organic Potatoes
Olive Oil
Garlic
Organic Butter
Salt and Pepper
Other spices optional

Take organic potatoes, and grate to desired shape and size. Take a cookie sheet, and baste lightly with olive oil. Cook at 350 degrees for 45 min's to an hour, depending on desired outcome (I like brown and crispy). When potatoes start to soften, mix 2 tablespoons of olive oil, 1/2 stick of butter, and steamed garlic to make a thin paste. Then, lightly brush over potatoes, turning potatoes as well. Use sea salt and pepper for added spice. Enjoy!

Segment 4 - How to Buy Potatoes (Whole and Chips)

Potatoes are not the healthiest vegetables you can eat, but there are some healthy tips when buying them.

  • Potato chips are now known as a "junk food", and with good reason. Until recently, the biggest problem with traditional potato chips were that they were made in "re cooked oils". You would know them as partially hydrogenated, and now the term Trans-fats, is used. In short, these oils are heart killers.
  • Stay away from any label that is more than about two sentences; has the words "artificial", "hydrogenated", or "sugar added". Instead, you can now buy chips that are from organic potatoes, expeller pressed (lower temp oils, no Trans-fats or hydrogenated oils), and flavored with herbs and spices, delicious, and nutritious.

Bottom Line

  • There are healthy alternatives to the standard junk-food potato chips. These chips can be especially helpful if you have kids.

Segment 5 - Healthy Habit - Get a Heart Scan

Simple, inexpensive and possibly life-saving!

  • There are some things in life that are so incredibly easy, and now (in this case) so incredibly inexpensive, and potentially life-saving, you have to ask yourself, why wouldn't everyone do this? Well, a heart scan is one of those things.
  • Now, incredibly accurate, reasonably priced, readily available, and completely non invasive, a heart scan takes about 45 minutes, and can give your doctor an very accurate picture of your heart health. Call and make an appointment today.
